Oh, hai! I read books, then I write down what I think of them.
Having really enjoyed the first in Ben Aaronovitch's Peter Grant books, I'm disappointed in this one. There's a lot to like about it - mainly the things I liked about the first one: it's funny, it's well written, it's not afraid to push into proper wincey nyerk territory (I actually had to stop reading the bit in the theatre and come back to it in daylight). Where it was let down was the plot. Something was obvious all the way through but the book played it as though it wasn't. When it did come to a head, it worked, but for more than half the book it was annoying. I was also incredibly annoyed by the sex scenes - they're probably explicit (I'm a poor judge), but they aren't there to deliberately tingle the lady-bits; they are numerous enough for me to have made a mental note PC Grant was having sex yet again and begin skimming until it got back to the story. So, good, not as enjoyable as the first one, but I will be reading the next in the series.
